“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” -Fred Rogers
After the election of 2016 I was feeling depressed and anxious about the state of humanity. What gave me hope was watching all the volunteers rush to the airports during the Muslim ban, then came the Women’s March and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement. During all of this a young girl from Sweden reminded the whole world we needed to take care of the earth and started her own movement. Once I started focusing on the “helpers” my anxiety started to fade away.
My own kids also felt helpless and anxious seeing laws being made that negatively affected so many in our community. I decided to show them all the amazing people that were using their courage, perseverance and passion to make the world a better place. I will never forget taking them to their first march and showing them that a group of passionate people can make a difference. What an empowering experience!
And now I want to share these stories with the rest of the world. I want kids to know that they can make an impact. Each child has his or her own amazing that they can contribute to the world. And together we can build a generation of well rounded contributors of social good.
